Home care tips for children with chickenpox
Chickenpox is an infection caused by the varicella zoster virus. It is highly contagious and leads to the development of rashes that are itchy and form into fluid-filled blisters. The rash first appears on the face, back and chest and then spreads all over the body. Chickenpox can cause extreme discomfort, especially among children. Other common signs and symptoms of chickenpox include fever, headache, loss of appetite, and fatigue.
Certain measures can be taken to help alleviate the symptoms of chickenpox among children, such as
Fever relief
Fever is one of the early signs and symptoms of chickenpox. Doctors recommend medications such as Tylenol, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen to reduce the temperature. Aspirin or products containing aspirin must be strictly avoided as it can cause complications such as Reye’s syndrome, which affects the liver and brain and can even cause death.
Oatmeal baths
The rashes that develop due to the varicella-zoster virus can be extremely itchy. Touching or itching them can cause scars. Having oatmeal baths can soothe the itchiness. Fill the tub with lukewarm water and add oatmeal under the running water.
Ointments
Applying ointments such as calamine lotion, petroleum jelly, or an anti-itch lotion can help soothe the itchiness. Don’t use any over-the-counter antibiotic ointments as they may cause an allergic reaction.
Staying indoors
Chickenpox is an extremely contagious infection. Therefore, it is recommended that you keep your children at home. Limit their exposure to other people until all their blisters have developed a crust. This process usually takes about a week.
Trim the fingernails
Scratching the blisters can leave permanent scars. The rashes that ornate as a result of chickenpox can be extremely itchy. It is, thus, advised that you cut short your child’s fingernails or cover the hands with mittens. This will also help in preventing any other skin infections caused by scratching blisters.
Relief from itchiness
You can give your child over-the-counter antihistamine to relieve itchiness.
Baking soda baths
Adding a cup of baking soda to a tub filled with lukewarm water can help relieve itchiness. Make your child soak in the water for 15 to 20 minutes to get relief. Give your child baking soda baths at least three times every day.
Chamomile compresses
Chamomile has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects. Brew about two or three chamomile tea bags in water or place it in a tub filled with warm water. Using cotton pads, apply the tea to the areas of the skin that is itchy. Pat the skin dry after applying the compress.
Pain relievers
If your child has blisters that are extremely painful, consult your doctor for an approved pain killer. Avoid using aspirin as it can cause several complications.
Wash hands regularly
Washing your hands regularly can prevent the spreading of the virus. It can also reduce the chances of developing a skin infection from scratching.
Do not panic if your child contracts chickenpox. Just give some time for the healing process to begin.
